Opening for Flash and Deodato

In the early '70s, the progressive rock scene was dominated by the likes of Yes, Genesis, and Pink Floyd. But in the midst of this musical revolution, an original member of Yes, Peter Banks struck out on his own to form the groundbreaking group, Flash. Tony Kaye from Yes also played on their first album. And it was on a fateful night in 1974 that Freeflite had the opportunity to open for these legends.

As the lights dimmed and the crowd hushed, Freeflite took the stage and delivered a set that left the audience wanting more. But it was the headliners, Flash, who truly stole the show. With their intricate musicianship and progressive sound, it was clear that Banks had not lost his touch. Flash was amazing!

Deodato

Following Flash's electrifying performance, the audience was treated to the smooth jazz sounds of Deodato, who delivered their hit version of the "2001 Space Odyssey" theme. But it was during the backstage chatter that something truly special happened.

Meeting Peter Banks

Peter Banks, the legendary guitarist, took some time to speak to Don from Freeflite, and what he said was nothing short of inspiring. Banks expressed his admiration for Freeflite's performance, even going so far as to declare them better than Deodato. But he also shared a message of spirituality, reminding the young musicians to stay focused on what really mattered.

Dave Chambers

Behind every successful band, there are often unsung heroes who help make it all possible. For Freeflite, one such hero was Dave Chambers. As the band's sound engineer, lighting technician, and all-around roadie, Chambers played a critical role in Freeflite's success.

Chambers' expertise with sound and lighting was unparalleled, and he was able to help the band achieve a level of audio and visual excellence that few others could match. He worked tirelessly to ensure that every note was heard and every effect was perfectly executed, all while creating a visually stunning show that left audiences in awe.

But Chambers was much more than just a sound and lighting guy. He was a true friend to the band, always there to lend a hand and provide support whenever it was needed.

Roger Groethe

Roger Groethe was the heartbeat of Freeflite, the band's powerhouse drummer who could keep up with the best of them. His virtuosic drumming skills were on par with some of the top drummers in the rock world, including those in the band Flash, REO or Styx.

Groethe's drumming style was both technical and dynamic, blending intricate fills with explosive rhythms that drove Freeflite's music to new heights.

Not only was Groethe a talented musician, but he was also a consummate showman and knew how to bring the energy of the music to life, elevating Freeflite's performances to unforgettable heights.

Although Freeflite may not have achieved the same level of commercial success as some of their peers, Groethe's drumming helped cement the band's reputation as a force to be reckoned with in the rock world.
